How to take care of a dog?

If you own a dog, then you have great responsibility in caring for it. Hopefully, you have already gone through the process of selecting the correct breed of dog for your situation, after all this is the fundamental aspect of caring for a dog. It would be unfair for example to own a Labrador if you live in the top floor in a small apartment. This article will help touch on a variety of important aspects in how to take care of a dog.

West Highland White Terrier
  • Your environment has to be right for your dog. This includes access to many rooms of the house so he doesn't feel closed in or trapped.
  • A good bed. This is essential for the well being of your dog. For him to have a place that he can call his own, it will make him feel safe and secure and comfortable. Keeping him insulated against potentially cold flooring with his bed will make him happier, as well as keeping the dirt levels on him down.
  • Regularly refill his water bowl with fresh water. Do this at least twice a day, and keep a check on it, especially in warm or hot weather.
  • Feeding habits must also be regular. Either once a day or twice a day, and try to keep to the same brand of dog food as constant changes can affect his stomach.
  • Heart worm medication. Give him this medication regularly as prescribed by your vet. It will fight against some nasty bacteria that can cause internal problems in your dog.
  • Flea and tic medication. Again, provide this for him all year round, as prescribed by your vet.
  • Regular vet checks and annual shots as required by your countries recommendations. This will include booster shots, rabies shots and other precautionary medication.
  • Always keep an eye on your dog and watch out for any change of behavior in terms of health etc.
  • Regular exercise is essential. Dog's are very active creatures and require exercise, especially if they are larger breeds.
  • Toys to stop boredom. Dogs can become quite bored and even depressed if they have nothing to do but sleep all day. Toys where you can put small treats in whereby they have to work to get it out are fantastic boredom busters.
  • Talk to him, tell him you love him and he will thrive. Dogs really do function best when given lots and lots of love and attention.
  • Grooming. The hairier the dog, the more grooming he will need, sometimes on a daily basis. Don't leave it too long or your dog could get very messy, smelly and unhappy. You also need to bathe him on a regular basis too.
  • Take out insurance that will assist you with costly vet bills. This reduces the stress on you and will help you get him to the vets earlier than otherwise if money worried you. He can therefore receive treatment much sooner.
  • And of course there are countless other ways in which you can care for your dog. But when you take on that commitment of having a dog, taking care of him is number one priority. A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.
